This is an original November 30, 1918 color cover for The Independent, with which is incorporated Harper's Weekly. This cover has a picture of General John Joseph "Black Jack" Pershing. He led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. In his lifetime he was the only person to be promoted to the highest rank ever held in the United States Army, General of the Armies.
