"Lee's Position on the North Anna"

This is an original 1910 two-color lithographed map of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's defensive positions at the North Anna River. During the Overland Campaign of 1864, Union General Ulysses S. Grant fought Lee to a stalemate at the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, the armies disengaged, Lee retreated south, and Grant followed close behind. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia crossed the North Anna River and set up defensive lines on the southern side and waited for Grant to arrive. Lee ordered his men to construct V shaped earthworks, hoping to split any Union assault in half, and trusting is men to overwhelm the attack on either side before it could be reinforced. After two skirmishes at the banks of the river, Grant decided to try and move around Lee to the southeast, towards the crossroads of Cold Harbor, forcing the Army of Northern Virginia to abandon their defensive line and fall back towards Richmond.
