This is an original 1895 black and white steel engraving of a portrait of Dr. Francis (Franz) Huebschmann, who came to Milwaukee in 1841. He served as a staff surgeon for the 26th Wisconsin Volunteer Regiment during the American Civil War, and later aided in the founding of the Twenty-Sixth Regiment Association. Huebschmann also served in the state senate, as an alderman for the community, as well as acting mayor for William Pitt Lynde. Based on his Jeffersonian Democratic political views, Huebschmann's aim was to aid in the framing of Wisconsin's constitution, particularly by exerting his views on foreigner citizen rights. Later, he served in high ranking positions for the German Democratic Association in Milwaukee. Huebschmann also aided in the founding of the first Milwaukee Male quartet, the German-English Academy and the first German newspaper: the Wisconsin Banner.
