This is an original 1896 black and white halftone print of Saxon soldiers defecting to the Coalition forces at Leipzig during the War of the Sixth Coalition. The Battle of Leipzig, or the Battle of Nations, fought from October 16-19, 1813, was the largest land battle in European history until World War I, involving over 500,000 men and over 2,500 artillery pieces from France, Prussia, Russia. Austria, and Sweden. On October 18th, the a large portion of the Saxon army, which had been fighting with Napoleon throughout the War, switched sides and joined the Allied forces of the Coalition.
