This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Etienne Antoine Eugene Ronjat which depicts Joseph François, Marquis Dupleix, who was the Governor-General of French India, and a rival of Robert Clive. He was a smart man, and knew that in order to acquire further territory he had to establish relations with the native princes. He embraced the culture he had been placed into, and it paid off; however in the end he lost everything thanks to peace treaties with the British and his avid interest in public policies.
