This is an original 1891 half-page print article about the famous Libby Prison that was located in Chicago, on Wabash Avenue, between Fourteenth and Sixteenth Streets. This building was a large and imposing structure, resembling a huge factory or warehouse. The Libby Prison was originally located in Richmond, Virginia; and served during the Civil War as the place of detention of thousands of Federal officers and soldiers. In 1889, the Libby Prison's material was removed to Chicago, and reconstructed in faithful duplication in Chicago, Illinois. This article also features an illustration of Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia, as it appeared before removal.
Libby Prison was dismantled and shipped to Chicago in a total of 132 twenty-ton railroad cars. It was bought by Charles F. Gunther and served as the Libby Prison War Museum from 1889 to 1899. Later, the structure was again dismantled, and the remaining material was sold in pieces.
