This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure depicting the famine in Russia during the Russian Civil War. The top image shows refugees being fed in Samara by the American Relief Administration. The center image shows bodies being carted away from a Russian village, and the bottom image shows starving families awaiting death in Samara. The caption for the latter image writes, "Waiting for death in one of the famine-stricken sections of Samara. Apathy has settled upon the dying families, who know that no exertions of their own can secure the food which simply is not within reach."
