This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of troops shooting liquid fire out of hoses during World War I. The caption writes, "Troops are here seen using liquid fire, one of the most terrible weapons developed by the war. The chemicals in the containers were forced through a hose and took fire on contact with the air. The stream of fire could be sent to a considerable distance and seared and blasted everything within reach." The first flame throwers were invented in Germany, and were usually filled with a petrol spray. The lower image shows a large gun being pulled by a twelve-horse team through Flanders, Belgium.
