1922 Rotogravure World War I Rheims Cathedral Stained Glass Window Ruin Historic

This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of the ruins of Reims Cathedral (Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims) in France (République Francaise). Other than the Chartres Cathedral, the Reims Cathedral has the most sculptures of all European Catholic Cathedrals. The cathedral was built in the 13th century by the masons Gaucher de Reims, Jean d'Orbais, Jean-Le-Loup, and Bernard de Soissons. Their names were given in the floor labyrinth. The caption writes, "Shattered and desecrated Cathedral of Rheims, once the pride and glory of the art lovers of the world. For nearly four years it was the target of German shells and the havoc wrought was irreparable."
