This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of an Alpine sentry in the Trentino region, men sounding gas attack alarms on the Italian front, and a trench along the Piave River. The caption for the gas alarm image writes, "Sounding the alarm for a gas attack in first-line trench on the Italian front. Gongs were placed at intervals along the line and men were detailed to beat them at the first indications of the insidious gas vapors in order that their comrades might assume their masks in time."
