1922 Rotogravure WWI Italian Tomb Unknown Soldier Burial Piazza Venezia Rome

This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of Italy's ceremony for the unknown soldier. The caption writes, "All Rome turned out to pay its meed of reverence at the burial of Italy's 'Unknown Warrior,' which took place in Rome Nov. 4, 1921, three years after the conclusion of the armistice between Italy and Austria. The piazza of Venezia was packed as the bier of the 'unknown warrior,' borne by the gold-medal men of hte Italian army and followed by gold-star mothers, approached the National Monument, the altar of the nation."
