Period Paper is excited to offer a humorous collection of book plate halftone prints by Erich Sokol, an Austrian artist who immigrated to America in the late 1950s. Each exceptionally printed image captures the nuance and variation of tone and line, deftly and quickly enumerating both the individualÕs and societyÕs foibles and follies with thoughtful examination, as well as the varied and complex realities of American life during this transformative time. SokolÕs intention with each image was Òto show that normal people, in their normal environment, engaged in the normal routine of their everyday lives, involuntarily are tragically ludicrous and ludicrously tragic. This truth is the simple Ôgag.ÕÓ More than four decades later, SokolÕs images still provide a point of departure from the assumptions we make about ourselves and others, offering a critical, yet sympathetic interpretation of our past, and current, realities.

This piece was illustrated by Sokol, Erich. There is no visible artist signature.
