This is an original 1907 black and white wood engraving of Glaucus and Nydia from a scene in the novel entitled, The Last Days of Pompeii, written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. According to this interpretation, ancient Romans kept goldfish as pets, but instead preferred to keep them on the mosaic tile floor rather than in bowls.
