Francisco Goya (1746-1828) was a Spanish painter who retained the office of court painter for Spanish royalty. Goya is considered the last Old Master, but is also thought to be one of the first modern painters. He was a printmaker and an oil painter and served as a role model for Picasso and Manet. He is known for "The Disasters of War" as well as his "Black Paintings." The "Black Paintings" was a set of 14 scenes oil painted onto the plaster walls of his home, "Quinta del Sordo." They evoke an unsettling feeling, and depict many mythical beings. The "Black Paintings" can be seen at the Museu del Prado in Madrid, Spain, but are unfortunately damaged due to the restoration process-- as the paintings had to be transferred from the plaster walls to a canvas support.
