This is a rare original 1875 color chromolithograph that depicts one of the breathtaking illuminations by Giulio Clovio. Dated 1573, this work was created for the papal coronation of Gregory XIII and bears the coat-of-arms of house Buoncampagni. Simple Flora, fauna, and two enigmatic cherubs (most of the common garden variety rendered in superb detail) all make up the rich border, and the four Evangelists grace the center, clearly the work of a master.

A unique feature of this illustration, which may be difficult to see in the digital image, is the use of gold ink that not only shimmers when it catches the light but also accentuates some of the finer details which might otherwise be missed.
