1885 Print Light Investigation Festivus Victorian Tale ORIGINAL HISTORIC LF2
Detective Rumplemintz was having a terrible day. He was in the middle of his fifth interrogation and was still getting nowhere. It was three days past Christmas and he was tired from the holiday. Mrs. Lucinda Knolls sat across of him wringing her lace handkerchief in her hands, airing her most recent grievances to a bored audience. Rumplemintz tried not to nod off while his puppy, Rosa, snoozed loudly below his chair.
"I'm sorry to have gotten off topic, detective, I just can't recall anything more," Lucinda wept. Rumplemintz rubbed his temples and inhaled sharply, looking into the bright lamp light to try and keep awake. "Let's just go over the facts once more," he said.
"So the first thing you recall, Mrs. Knolls, is that a body builder lifted the carriage off of the child?" Rumplemintz had heard this story from four other witnesses, but still did not find it to be believable. "Yes," she responded. "And then there was the pole?" he asked.
"Yes," Lucinda said, "the body builder looked about and found a pole, which he used to prop up the carriage. That freed up his hands to pull the child free from beneath the carriage. And that's when we all noticed, the child, he was unharmed! I swear it was a miracle before our very eyes!" Rumplemintz was unconvinced. "Then what happened?" Lucinda's eyes were filled with tears of joy and Rumplemintz fought back the urge to believe her story. "Then the young boy's mother invited the body builder and the carriage driver to her home for dinner," she said.
"Okay, I think I have enough. Just one more question before you go, Mrs. Knolls. Do you remember the date of this alleged miracle?" "Yes," she said, "I remember clearly that it was December 23rd. A day that will surely be remembered for years to come."
