1922 Rotogravure Oberammergau Passion Play Stage Caiaphas Jesus Christ Religious

This is an original 1922 sepia rotogravure of scenes from the passion play in the village of Oberammergau, Germany (Deutschland). Christ appears in the upper image at the entrance of the tomb, and in the lower image, Caiaphas is seen ripping his clothing in anger. The town is famous for its Passion Play, first performed in 1634, and presented once every ten years thereafter. The citizens made a vow to God to perform the play after being spared from the bubonic plague in the 17th century. The play involves over 2,000 actors and utilizes all of the residents in the village.
