1904 Print French Actress Sarah Bernhardt Childhood Auteuil Boarding School TSM1

This is an original 1904 halftone print of the educational establishment at Auteuil iin Picardie, France, where French stage and film actress Sarah Bernhardt spent some of childhood years. The boarding school, located at 18 Rue Boileau, Auteuil, was under the direction of Madame Fressard during the time Bernhardt attended. Photography courtesy of C. Robert of Paris.

Bernhardt also lived with a hired nurse, after her aunt relinquished guardianship. Bernhardt's mother was neglectful and often absent, and her father was completely uninvolved in her life.

Prior to the age of five, Sarah nearly died of Tuberculosis. Doctors claimed the young girl would not live to see adulthood. Upon learning this, Sarah asked her mother for a beautiful coffin to be buried in; however, her mother declined, providing her with a standard coffin, which Sarah would often sleep in, even into adulthood. It is said that she carried the coffin with her while traveling and on tours.
