1904 Print Rue De Provence Sarah Bernhardt Child Home Paris France TSM1

This is an original 1904 halftone print of the Rue de Provence, where, at the tender age of five years-old, Sarah Bernhardt (French stage and film actress) lived with a hired nurse, after her aunt relinquished guardianship. Bernhardt's mother was neglectful and often absent, and her father was completely uninvolved in her life.

Prior to the age of five, Sarah nearly died of Tuberculosis. Doctors claimed the young girl would not live to see adulthood. Upon learning this, Sarah asked her mother for a beautiful coffin to be buried in; however, her mother declined, providing her with a standard coffin, which Sarah would often sleep in, even into adulthood. It is said that she carried the coffin with her while traveling and on tours.
