This is an original 1937 halftone print portrait of Pat Kilgarrlin in Natchez, MIssissippi. The caption writes, "Pat likes his likker, will not work at anything, and lives on grocery handouts and an occasional bummed nickel. He is the type that critics of relief have in mind when they yell about the taxpayer's dollar." This image was taken to demonstrate the number of unemployed people in the United States during the late 1930s. Photography by William G. Houck Jr.
