Goudy, Frederic

Frederic Goudy (March 8, 1865-May 11, 1947) was a prolific American type designer from Bloomington, Illinois. Before finding his artistic interest, he was an accountant for a Chicago realtor. Goudy, along with Will Ransom, founded the Village Press in Park Ridge, Illinois before it moved to New York. He was instrumental in the Arts and Crafts Movement. His first famous type was used for an H. G. Wells anthology. In 1927 he became the vice president of the Continental Type Founder Association, which allowed him to distribute his typefaces. By the end of his life he had produced 122 typefaces- his most famous being Copperplate Gothic, Goudy Old Style and Kennerly Old Style.
