This is an original 1874 black and white in-text wood engraving of an illustration that depicts the trial of the "new" Petrel lifeboats that were invented by C. Chapman and made and sold by Thomas Piggott & Company. The lifeboats pictured here were equipped aboard the 98-gun second rate training ship, HMS Caledonia during the Victorian era.
