The Statue of Liberty was modeled after the Roman goddess of freedom, Libertas, by sculptor Frederic Bartholdi, and dedicated in 1886. The landmark is an early example of curtain wall construction, which was developed by Alexandre-Gustave Eiffel. Eiffel built a system of trusses and springs underneath the skirts of the copper statue. This allowed the structure to withstand the daily beatings of rain, sun, wind, and ocean spray without cracking or breaking down. Eiffel, upset that he did not receive much appreciation for his ingenuity, built his next piece entirely of frame-- the Eiffel tower for the Paris Exposition of 1889.
