This is an original 1875 black and white steel engraving of a painting by French artist Emile Signol (1804 _ 1892), which depicts Bernard of Claivaux preaching to the public about how beneficial a second crusade would be. Behind him, King Louis VII and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, listen intently. It was Pope Eugene III who instigated this crusade, and it was the first time a real king would lead it directly. Of course, the usual death and massacre followed.
