This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which depicts King Charles II of Navarre, a Pyrenean kingdom located near the border of Spain and France. Known as Charles the Bad, this fickle monarch notoriously continued to switch sides in the Hundred Years War between England and France. Although depicted here in prison, his gruesome death was what he really became known for. While a servant was bandaging him up from foot to neck, she accidentally set him on fire when she went to cut the remaining linen bandage with an open flame. She shrieked and ran out of the room, unfortunately neglecting the Royal flambé behind her.

De Neuvile, Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (1835 _ 1885) was a French painter who specialized in very patriotic historical scenes with subjects such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art. After his death, several of his pieces were acquired for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.
