This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Etienne Antoinne Eugene Ronjat, which depicts Bertrand-François Mahé de la Bourdonnais. He was a naval officer in the service of the French East India Company. He quarreled incessantly with his rival, Joseph François, Marquis Dupleix, and went to Paris to complain about Dupleix's recent appointment as Governor-General in French India. Upon arriving, he was imprisoned in the Bastille for two years for not performing his duties, and despite getting acquitted he died shortly after, cursing Dupleix to the last.
