This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of Georges-Louis Leclerc Bouffon, a French naturalist who published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle over the course of his lifetime. He was also extremely interested in what could be described as primitive evolutionary studies, or even microevolution. He firmly believed that all races were descended from Caucasians, and their individual skin pigmentation and other genetic differences were a result of their unique environments and lifestyles.
