1875 Woodcut Paul Philippoteaux Pierre Corneille Hotel Rambouillet Salon XEA6

This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Paul Philippoteaux which depicts dramatist Pierre Corneille reading one of his new plays to a large gathering at the Hôtel Rambouillet, residence of Madame de Rambouillet and noted literary salon during the 17th century. The women of the salon referred to each other as Les Précieuses (The Precious Ones), and were noted for always wearing blue stockings. Famous comedic playwright Moliére later mocked them in the play Les Précieuses Ridicules (The Ridiculous Precious Women) for both the weird behaviors and the absurdly delicate language they employed whilst in their salon.
