This is an original 1914 black and white halftone print of Königsberg Castle, the old Prussian fort in Königsberg, a city in the monastic state of the Teutonic Knights, the Duchy of Prussia, the Kingdom of Prussia and Germany until 1946. The castle and much of the city was destroyed in World War II. The city was occupied by the Soviet Union and was renamed Kaliningrad.

Many of the images (including battleships, U-boats, Krupp factories and arms) also document the rise of German nationalism and the growing militarization of the German Empire in the years preceding the first global conflict. Sadly, many of these beautiful buildings and cities that survived the First World War were subsequently either damaged or destroyed during the Second World War.
