This is an original 1902 black and white print ad from the Stockton Chamber of Commerce encouraging travel, tourism and residency in San Joaquin County.

The county of San Joaquin, created in 1850, was one of the first counties of California; however, the county did not become officially incorporated until 1920.

While Stockton, of course, has its roots deep in Native American origins (specifically the Miwok Indians), after European immigrants came to the land during the 1848 gold rush, the area took on a following and in 1850 Stockton was officially incorporated. The town was named after Robert F. Stockton; thus making the city the first in the state not to have a Spanish or Native American-based moniker.

Interesting Fact:

Benjamin Holt of the Holt Manufacturing Company (formerly Stockton Wheel Company) was founded in Stockton in 1883. This company was responsible for the famous "Caterpillar" machinery. Though Holt did not trademark "Caterpillar" until 1911, the origins of the machine dates back to 1904 when Charles Clements, a photographer for the Holt Company, witnessed Mr. Holt testing his first operable track-laying machine, which was forced to trudge through the moist soil of the San Joaquin Valley. Clements openly observed the machine crawling like a caterpillar through the wet farmlands; Holt jumped on the simile and said "Caterpillar it is. That's the name for it!" Thus, the "Caterpillar" reign was officially born.
