This is an original 1876 black and white wood engraving of a rather unusual looking coach. Known as a pannier (not to be confused with the pannier hoop skirts which were in fashion at the time), these carriages could fit large families and their luggage, which took up space in the baskets to the front and rear. Unfortunately, due to their size, they were extremely heavy. This meant more horses had to be used to pull them, and therefore they ran the increased potential of accidents happening. Please note the dimensions of this item.
