1888 Chromolithograph Japan Cango Litter Transportation Norimon Palanquin LCH2

This is a rare original 1888 color chromolithograph which depicts several different methods of transportation used in historical Japan. A norimon was an enclosed box in which the nobility traveled. There was always a surplus of porters, so that reliefs could insert themselves without disturbing their passenger. In this case, the two men nearest to the passenger as coolies, who will carry their master's sword and any personal belongings. The ornate boxes below are generally reserved for tea service, which wealthy of noblemen would bring with them on long journeys. Naturally, boats were a common method of passage, and in the summer the majority of lower class workers would go about their day in various degrees of undress.
