"Les Modes Parisiennes"

This is an original 1856 hand-colored steel engraving of two fashionable outfits for Victorian ladies. On the left is a walking dress of plum-colored silk. The skirt is ornamented with palms embroidered in the silk. A mantilla of black silk and a white crepe bonnet trimmed with pansies and a bow of plum-colored velvet ribbon complete this outfit. On the right is a carriage dress of bright fawn-colored silk with two deep flounces bordered with a wide satin stripe of a darker hue. A black silk mantilla is worn over this dress with a bonnet of rose-colored silk. In the center is a little girl's dress of gray plaid with one flounce, trimmed with black velvet and rows of black lace. The jacket also has a flounce and is trimmed like the skirt.
