This is an original 1945 halftone print of a road between Marseilles and Dijon, France (Republique Française). The caption writes, "For miles the roadside was strewn with destroyed German equipment and dead. Note discolored highway in top picture after engineers had cleared the road of debris. Blood, oil and fire, stain the once white concrete slabs."

"Conad History" (Continental Advance) was created to preserve the history of the United States Army supply forces, and to provide a basis for future studies by the United States War Department. The book covered the continental advance, communications zones, the European theater of operations, and the United States Army during 1944 and 1945. The Conad staff began in Africa and traveled to central Europe where they finished.
