This is an original 1844 black and white steel engraving of "Jean-Sylvain Bailly," of France. Bailly was an astronomer and a lecturer, and the Mayor of Paris from 1789 to 1791. As an early leader in the French Revolution, he lost his head to the guillotine during a period of that Revolution called, "The Reign of Terror."
