This is an original 1870 hand-colored copper engraving of the costume of an upper-class Parisian women at the time of the First French Empire or Napoleonic Empire in France, after a work by Antoine Charles Horace Vernet. The typical dress of the period had an Empire silhouette -- high-waisted, gathered just under the bust and falling loosely below.
