This is an original 1871 black and white woodcut of the Gates of Herculaneum, Campania, Italy. The ancient city was among those lost beneath the ashes in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE. The site is famous as being the first source of Roman skeletal remains as it was custom for Romans to cremate their dead which, in this instance, nature did for them.
