This is an original 1873 halftone print featuring an engraving of a plan, designed by N. Finegan, architect, Newark, Ohio; consisting in building the houses in narrow streets in such a way that the upper stories stand back from 10 to 15 feet, so as to have a secondary sidewalk over the top of the store fronts, accessible by easy staircases, and protected by an iron fence; the different upper sidewalks along the successive blocks are connected by elegant bridges. If the houses are very high, a second terrace may be made in front of the third story, as shown in the engraving on the building at the right, and named "Terrace Hotel".
