This is an original 1873 black and white steel engraving of "St. Peter of Alcantara," by Bartolome Esteban Murillo. Saint Peter is recognized by the Catholic religion to be the first pope. He was also one of Jesus' twelve apostles. The original artwork was held in the Aguado Gallery.
Bartolome Esteban Murillo
Bartolome Esteban Murillo (1617-1682) was a native of Seville, Spain. He was most recognized for his religious paintings. Murillo studied under Juan del Castillo, as well as Velasquez. Later, Murillo served as president of the Seville Academy of Painting. Unfortunately, in 1682, during his work for the high altar of the Capuchin Church of Cadiz, he fell from a scaffolding, sustaining severe injuries, which, consequently, led to his death.
