Carbon prints were invented in 1864, and remained popular up until the early 1900s. Instead of containing silver like most contemporary photographs, pigment was encased within the confines of a gelatine base layer. As a result, many different shades of sepia or warm black were able to be used. Cracking is an unfortunate effect of natural aging, and is most common in the areas where the pigment appears darkest.
