This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which depicts Henri Coiffier, Marquis de Cinq-Mars, and Jacques Auguste de Thou heading to their executions. Cardinal Richelieu introduced Cinq-Mars to King Louis XIII in hopes that the king would take him on as a lover. Although Louis supposedly did succumb to the lad's charms, Cinq-Mars turned out tobe a lot less malleable than Richlieu originally thought he would be. As a result, it become a subtle battle between them, each attempting to turn Louis against the other fellow, and finally the Cardinal won.
