This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which depicts the Duke of Guise standing over the corpse of important Huguenot leader Gaspard de Coligny during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in Paris, France. After an attempt was made on the Protestant's life, Catholics were worried that the Huguenot's would retaliate and simply decided to off their Coligny before there was any chance of retribution. During the commotion on the day of the massacre, Jean Charles D'Ianowitz, who was a servant of the Duke of Guise, stabbed Coligny at home and tossed his body out of the nearest window. As the fall hadn't killed him, one of de Guise's cronies took matters into his own hands and later beheaded the dying man where he fell.
