This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which captures the shocked look of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V who was grabbed around the waist by the young Duke of Orléans in a playful gesture. Time probably stopped for a second as the onlookers waited to see how the monarch would react. In fact, he was quite good-natured about the incident. King François (Francis) I has instructed that his son the Duke accompany their honored guest through France, most likely to keep an eye on him, as Charles was Francis' biggest pet peeve during the course of his reign as King of France.

De Neuvile, Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (1835 _ 1885) was a French painter who specialized in very patriotic historical scenes with subjects such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art. After his death, several of his pieces were acquired for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.
