1875 Woodcut Alphonse Neuville Jacques Coeur Bourges Hostel Architecture XEA6

This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which depicts one of Jacques Coeur's many properties, this one being a hostel in Bourges. King Charles VII named him Master of the Mint, which in hindsight was probably a mistake. Although a brilliant merchant, he created a monopoly on a variety of different trade goods, and became so wealthy that nobleman were coming to him for money instead of the Crown. As a result, he had a lot of enemies. His downfall occured after the death of the King's mistress, Agnès, was pinned on him, and all of his assets were seized. There was no proof, but enough people in power owed him money that none was needed.

De Neuvile, Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (1835 _ 1885) was a French painter who specialized in very patriotic historical scenes with subjects such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art. After his death, several of his pieces were acquired for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.
