1875 Woodcut Alphonse Neuville Margerite Valois Leran Bartholomews Day XEA6

This is an original 1875 black and white woodcut of an illustration by French artist Alphonse de Neuville which depicts Maguerite de Valois, Queen of Navarre and France, scared witless by the strange man who ran into her bedroom during the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Without thinking, he had rushed into her room and thrown himself on her for protection. Members of the Catholic force that made up the perpetrators of the massacre raced into the room after, looking so menacing that the Queen was shrieking as much as the poor Huguenot. Nanqay, the Captain of the Guard, arrived on the scene shortly after, and burst out laughing at the bizarre situation. The injured Protestant, named de Leran, was allowed to live, and the Queen nursed him back to health herself. However, this was but one of the few happily-ending stories from that horrible and brutal event.

De Neuvile, Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe

Alphonse-Marie-Adolphe de Neuville (1835 _ 1885) was a French painter who specialized in very patriotic historical scenes with subjects such as the Franco-Prussian War, the Crimean War and the Zulu War. He originally joined the naval school in Lorient, France, but he soon realized that his primary passion was art. After his death, several of his pieces were acquired for the Luxembourg Palace in Paris.
