This is an original 1877 halftone print of Wren's Gas Works for making petroleum gas, manufactured by Dr. Wren, corner of Water and Jay Streets, Brooklyn, NYC. With only a single retort this apparatus could produce an amount of gas equivalent to at least 25,000 cubic feet of coal gas -- enough petroleum gas for illumination to supply a village of 6,000 to 8,000 inhabitants.
