This is an original 1877 black and white wood engraving of the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein, Germany standing as a stone sentinel over the neighboring city and port. Although the region was attacked several times during the Napoleonic Wars, the fortress sitting on a mountaintop in the center of the Rhine River was never breached.
