1878 Wood Engraving Hill Kenhari India Archaeological Cave Hill Landscape XGA4

This is an original 1878 black and white wood engraving of the Kanheri Caves on the outskirts of Mumbai (formerly Bombay), India. The caves are located in the deep forest of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and have been carved into basalt rock; there are 109 in total. The caves show Buddhist influence, and date back from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century AD. Most of these caves are viharas, or Buddhist areas for meditation, but some, like the cave shown, are chaityas-- large, congregational worship areas.

This 133+ year old Item is rated Near Mint / Very Fine. Light aging throughout. No creases. No natural defects. No surface rub. No tears. Light moisture wrinkling. Please note that there is print on the verso of this steel engraving.
