This is an original 1880 black and white wood engraving of Cardinal de Richelieu Towing Cinq-Mars and De Thou which was originally a painting created by Hippolyte (Paul) Delaroche (1797-1856) who was a French painter. He was known for his straightforward technique and dramatic compositions. Delaroche often painted characters from ancient history, founders of Christianity, and figures from closer to his own time.

Cardinal de Richelieu (1585-1642) was a French clergyman, noble, and statesman and served as King Louis XIII's chief minister beginning in 1624.
