This is an original 1881 black and white steel engraving by John Chester Buttre (1821-1893) that portrays Martha Johnson Patterson (1828-1901), who served as the White House hostess in places of her mother, First Lady Eliza McCardle Johnson (1810-1876), the wife of Andrew Johnson (1808-1875), the seventeenth President of the United States of America.
